Western Dog Violet (Viola adunca)
This listing is for a real pressed plant and botanical specimen. Inspired by herbarium specimens, it is an artistic presentation of Western Dog Violet (Viola adunca) which I collected from their natural habitat in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico. These very common, tiny, blue-to-purple (very occasionally white), spurred violets are often hidden among grasses and taller plants in forests and meadows. One of the earliest bloomers, they cover forest floors by mid-May.
Wild violets provide a source of pollination for many native bees and flies and are a preferred egg-laying host for many fritillary butterflies. The early blooms of wild violets can provide nectar and pollen to many different bees when other plants are not available. They are edible and medicinal plants.
The plant is mounted on acid-free, high-quality (320 gsm), watercolor paper handmade in India. A collection label is also included with the specimen scientific name, common name, family name, location and date collected. The placement of the collection label varies on each piece, depending on best artistic spacing. Each flower is different, so each botanical sheet is different. The mounted wildflower you receive may look different from the one pictured in this listing.

The plant has been pressed for a minimum of 6 weeks in accordance with professional herbarium standards to maximize the quality and longevity of its color. Please note that, as with all dried plants, these are susceptible to fading or changing color over time.
