LARGE FORMAT BOTANICAL STUDIES
California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)
Grown in my garden in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pressed on August 10, 2025.
Late summer in my Santa Fe garden. The California Poppy thrives in high desert ground where others fail—silken petals, warm yellow, drought-tolerant and persistent. Flowers close in later afternoon and open again with the morning warmth, a daily gesture of resilience. This specimen was pressed at the height of bloom, capturing a moment of brightness.
A3 handmade watercolor paper from India, mounted on warm white, acid-free 16×20 matboard. A specimen label documents the plant's origin, date, and ecological context. This is a record of one specific place and one particular moment.
As with all pressed plants, these will gradually fade or shift color over time—the pace depends on the plant, but all develop a lovely vintage character eventually. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from moisture to slow this process. The plant has been pressed for a minimum of six weeks following professional herbarium standards to maximize quality and longevity.
Grown and tended in my own garden, this California Poppy reflects the joy of cultivating native plants in the high desert. Learn more about gardening with intention and plant stewardship here.
